Home » Tours » Italy » A week in Ravenna: mosaics, heritage, beach and great italian food!

This is a self-guided tour itinerary that we suggest for solo travelers, families, couples or small groups, traveling with their own means of transport, but it can be organised also for a larger group, and in this case we can provide the transport and a tour manager to accompany you around and give you always the best experience.

The ideal season is from April to October, but the beach is best enjoyed from June to September, depending on your preferences in temperature!

Focused on the beautiful city of Ravenna, famous for it’s Unesco heritage Basilicas and their incredible mosaics, the one week program takes you also to discover the natural areas, and most of all the history of how man has adapted to the local landscape, while all the same transforming it to survive and thrive, in balance with nature’s rythms.

In the program there are day trips to visit the Natural Park of the Po River Delta, to discover the nature (birdwatching is also possible!) and the heritage of centuries of working in the marsh areas, and/or Cervia and the salt mines, that still produce a very high quality salt.

And speaking of salt… food and wine are an integral part of this experience, and we will definitively provide some great food moments, and our guides will give you tips and good addresses for your meals.

We have great rates on hotels in Ravenna and holiday villages on the beach with wheelchair accessible rooms – if you prefer to stay near the sea, therefore we can provide the accommodation and the guides and the gastronomic and wine experiences. The rest of the tour you can do at your own pace, we will prepare for you a booklet to guide you with information about the places suggested and the accessibility, so you can enjoy fully the experience, and if you would like a guide, we can set that up for you too.

Contact us to get a quote! This is the perfect option if you want to make your planning easy for the accessible accommodation and activities, and save money at the same time.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Ravenna

You can reach Ravenna with your car or we can organise a pick up at the nearest airport, with a vehicle suited to your needs, if you have a mobility issue.

Settle in your hotel or camping depending on your choice. We have various types of accommodation available, for people who use a wheelchair or power scooter we have adapted hotels, campings, or bed & breakfast style accommodation.

Day 2Explore the city - day tour of the Unesco heritage sites

Your guide will pick you up for a walking tour of the Unesco heritage sites so you can see the beautiful mosaics. in the Basilicas and learn all about the history of this part of Italy. You will visit the  Basilica of San Vitale, the Battistero Neoniano, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo with the Museo Arcivescovile (Cappella di Sant’Andrea e Cattedra d’avorio)  and the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia.

Enjoy lunch in local gourmet street food spots (in Italy streeet food is a very developed activity with some wonderful gourmet experiences).

Day 3 and 4At the beach

Explore the best wheelchair accessible beach near Ravenna: 20 minutes by car (consider that there can be quite some traffic so it may take longer) and you are in the beach set up by the Non-Profit association “Insieme a te” (“Together with you”), which is not only equipped with beach wheelchairs and access to the beach, but also has trained volunteers that help you get in the water. The association also has special SofaO chairs for people to get in the water and float on them.

The beach is equipped also with three spots with electricity and drinking water for people using a ventilator. Boat trips are also available!

Access to the beach is free but must be booked! Visit their website to learn more (in Italian). If you need help getting in touch for language reasons drop us an email and we will take care of that.

On either evening, depending on your preferences, we will take you to a local famous wine bar for a local wines tasting.

Day 5The Park of the Po Delta: a paradise for birdwatchers

This is an optional day trip for the nature lovers and birdwatchers: the Park of the Po Delta is one unique wetland in North Eastern Italy, and depending on the season you can spot a wide variety of birds and other animals.

In the morning we will visit Villanova of Bagnacavallo, a lovely village famous in the past for it’s local manifacturing industry with marsh herbs, where we will learn about marsh culture and history at the local Museum. After lunch in charming Bagnacavallo, we will proceed to the Park to see the wet area and learn more about it at the visitor centre.

Alternative day trip: discover the salt mines of Cervia: we start with the local museum and then will continue to the Park section where you can actually visit the salt mines. Lunch in Cervia in a local restaurant where you will be able to taste recipes with the local salt!
